About us
Yura gUG - Visual Storytelling for Social Change (Yura) is a non-profit company founded in Berlin, Germany, in 2022 by Palestinian photographer Mohamed Badarne. It uses multi-media art and visual storytelling to challenge stereotyped, dehumanizing images of racialized people, migrants, and other sidelined social groups in the mainstream media and wider public sphere. We believe that creating an inclusive human narrative is a crucial contribution to the fight against racism, oppression, and exploitation.
Yura began its work by taking on the social media platform Untold Palestine, which was originally launched in 2019. The goals of the project are to tell stories of the everyday lives of Palestinians, with their small and big achievements and dreams, as a counter-narrative to the faceless or iconic figures defined by violence. Starting from there, we want to extend our activities regionally to work towards our vision of re-imagining the world based on our multi-faceted common humanity and shared planet, and debunking chauvinist and other degrading views, both within our own societies and from global perspectives.
