After the age of fourteen, I never truly saw myself again. I look into the mirror, yet I cannot see myself. I can no longer recognize people’s faces. Everything around me has begun to fragment. Blurred vision and this visual impairment are what I carry with me at this stage of my life.
Six years ago, I was diagnosed with hereditary macular edema. According to the National Eye Institute, “there is currently no cure for hereditary macular edema.”
I began this project as an attempt to better understand my diagnosis and to express my own experience. It is my first step toward documenting this condition and bringing it back into public conversation.
