Developing Photography Projects, Documentary Photography, and Visual Storytelling Workshop concluded in Amman as part of the 14th edition of the Amman Photo Festival. The workshop was organized by Darat Al Tasweer in collaboration with YURA and Untold Palestine, bringing together photographers from Palestine and Jordan with the support of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation.
The workshop was developed through a shared vision among the organizing partners, grounded in the belief that expanding access to professional training is essential to strengthening photographers' skills in documentary photography, visual storytelling, and the development of long-term photographic projects, ultimately supporting the creation of more meaningful and impactful work.
Held over five days, the workshop combined lectures, hands-on training, and fieldwork. It brought together both professional and emerging photographers from diverse backgrounds in an intensive learning experience focused on developing personal projects—from the initial concept through editing to final presentation.
The program covered a range of topics, including photographic project development, visual language, photography and the city, documentary ethics, and visual editing. Linda Khoury led sessions on project development and methodologies for building long-term photographic projects, while Laura Boushnak worked closely with participants on editing and refining their visual stories and selection. Yaqeen Yamani facilitated sessions exploring the relationship between photography and the city, as well as the intersections between image and text. Mohammad Badarneh led discussions on the ethics of documentary photography, the challenges of producing long-term photographic projects, and the role of visual storytelling in creating social impact.
The workshop was further enriched by the participation of two internationally renowned photographers, Moises Saman of Magnum Photos and Bob Sacha, who shared insights from their professional journeys and presented their photographic projects, offering participants a rare opportunity to engage with internationally recognized practices in documentary photography.
The workshop concluded with an evening event at Fan wa Chai, where participants presented the photographic projects they had developed throughout the training. The presentations were followed by an open discussion with the audience and concluded with a musical performance celebrating the cultural heritage of the Levant. The closing event brought together photography, music, and storytelling, underscoring the importance of initiatives like this in fostering a supportive and collaborative community for photographers across the region.
